How do I set up a Messana mTouch?

How do I configure and update the mTouch?

Once the mTouch is installed and connected to your Messana system, you can configure its operating mode, visible zones, display settings, and keep its software up to date.

Choosing an Operating Mode :

The mTouch has two operating modes:

Full Interface Mode (default) gives you full access to all menus, zones, schedules, and system settings. It’s the same interface as the Messana phone and tablet app.

Zone Control Mode shows only zone and macro-zone controls. All other menus and advanced features are hidden. This is useful when the mTouch is installed in a room where occupants should only control their comfort without accessing system settings.

Activating Zone Control Mode:

  1. Open the Main Menu and tap Settings.
  2. Tap User Preferences and scroll to mTouch settings.
  3. Toggle “Use device in zone control mode” to on.
  4. Enter the PIN when prompted. The default PIN is 000000 (six zeros). If it has been changed (see “Managing the PIN” below), enter the current value instead.

The main menu is replaced by a gear icon in the top-left corner of the header.

Returning to Full Interface Mode :

  1. Tap the gear icon in the top-left of the header.
  2. Enter the PIN.
  3. Toggle “Use device in zone control mode” to off.

Customizing Visible Zones:

In Zone Control Mode, you can choose which zones and macro-zones appear on the screen. This is useful when the mTouch is installed in a specific room and you want occupants to see only the controls for that room.
  1. Make sure the mTouch is in Zone Control Mode.
  2. Tap the three-dots menu in the top-right corner of the zones list.
  3. Tap “Hide zones / macro-zones“.
  4. Enter the PIN when prompted.
  5. Toggle each zone or macro-zone on or off. Use the “All” toggle at the top to control all zones at once.

Your changes take effect immediately.

Example:

If the mTouch is installed in the kitchen, toggle off all zones except "Kitchen" so occupants see only the kitchen controls.

Adjusting Display Settings:

Access the display settings by following these steps:

  1. Open the Main Menu and tap Settings.
  2. Tap User Preferences.
  3. Scroll to the mTouch settings section.

Note:

The mTouch settings section only appears after the system has been paired with an mTouch (pairing happens automatically the first time an mTouch boots with the system).

The controls in the section depend on where you open it:

  • On the mTouch itself: brightness, display off timeout, proximity sensor, and the Zone Control Mode toggle.
  • On the Messana mobile app (phone or tablet): PIN management (see "Managing the PIN" below).

You can adjust each setting by tapping the left/right arrows, or by tapping the current value to open a selection dialog.
The mTouch has three display settings:
  1. Brightness: Controls the screen brightness level.

Options: Very Low, Low, Medium, High, Very High (default)
  2. Display off timeout: Sets how long the screen stays on after the last touch before turning off.

    Options: 15 sec (default), 30 sec, 1 min, 3 min, 5 min, 10 min, 15 min, 30 min, 1 hour, Never
  3. Proximity sensor: When enabled, the mTouch detects when someone approaches and wakes the screen automatically. The option determines how far away a person must be for the sensor to trigger.

Option:

Approximate range

The UI shows only the labels (Disabled, Low, Medium, High). The ranges above are the physical distances each level corresponds to.

Managing the PIN:

The PIN protects the Zone Control Mode toggle and the “Hide zones / macro-zones” dialog. The default value is 000000 (six zeros) and it is strongly recommended to change it after the mTouch is first paired.

Important:

The PIN can only be changed from the Messana mobile app (phone or tablet), not from the mTouch itself. Only Master and Service users see the PIN controls.

To change or view the PIN, from the Messana mobile app:
  1. Open the Main Menu, tap Settings, then User Preferences.
  2. Scroll to mTouch settings.
  3. Tap Change PIN. Enter a new 6-digit PIN (numeric only) in the dialog and tap Save. If the input is not six digits, a “PIN must be 6 digits” message appears and the PIN is not changed.
  4. To view the current PIN, tap the eye icon next to the PIN row. Tap it again to hide it.

The PIN is stored per system: if more than one mTouch is paired with the same Messana system, they all share the same PIN. Changing the PIN from the mobile app updates it for every mTouch in that system.

Disconnecting from a System:

If you need to switch the mTouch to a different Messana system, you can disconnect from the current one:
  1. Open the Main Menu.
  2. Tap Disconnect.
  3. Confirm in the dialog.
The mTouch returns to the system selection screen, where you can connect to a different Messana system on your network.

Tip:

If you simply reboot the mTouch without disconnecting, it will reconnect to the same system automatically.

Updating the Software:

The mTouch keeps itself up to date automatically, and you can also check for updates manually.

Automatic Updates

Every day at approximately 3:00 AM (device local time), the mTouch checks for a new version. If one is found, it is downloaded and installed without any action on your part.

Automatic Updates

In the zones list header, look for the cloud icon:
  • Gray cloud: you are running the latest version.
  • Orange cloud: a new version is available.

Tap the cloud icon to check your current version or start an update. If an update is available, tap Update and follow the on-screen prompts.
